I read the New York Times article A Crisis Right Now: San Francisco and Manila Face Rising Seas. I chose this specific article on the environment because it’s relevant to me specifically as I live in the bay area. The article examines just how many people are in immediate danger as a result of the rising sea level, the article also compares and contrasts the situation in Manila and San Francisco point out that while both face extremely similar levels of danger as a result of the rising sea level IE they are at similar elevations, the biggest difference is the wealth in each respective location. San Francisco being very wealthy and Manila being very poor. Regardless, both cities face the serious conundrum of whether or not they want to bend the water to their will by building flood walls and canals or if they want to move out the people closest to the coast. The final point that the author brings up is that very few people understand just how severe the situation is because they are inland and don’t experience the immediate danger. I can really relate to this because even though I grew up in the bay area I never knew that the ocean level rising was a serious issue that would legitimately impact me. Overall the article was pretty quality but it wasn’t particularly intellectually demanding and was more factual and had the purpose of educating the reader instead of pushing an opinion and challenging the reader’s own. This is the nature of the subject, because its examining the results and consequence of climate change opposed to something that causes or adds to climate change.
