I chose a more general non-profit, the NRDC (National Resource Defense Council), I chose a more general one because as you get into more niche categories of environmentalism, in my case oil spills, the quality of the website and information available decrease significantly. I was able to find several non-profits that directly dealt with oil spills such as the Spill Control Association of America or The International Spill Control Organisation but upon closer inspection either of their cities have really been updated for many many years. Before we continue and examine the NRDC and how they spend their money by attempting to understand the 990 form I want it to be known that I am very much not in my element with tax forms and anything I am able to devine from the form is susceptible to be incorrect or simply a misinterpretation of some sort. For this reason I will leave a link to the form at the end of this blog. Upon closer inspection the NRDC does indeed have substantial articles regarding oil spills and their effects on the environment including specific oil spills. The website has a passive donate button in bright orange on every page but only actively prompts you on the home page. They do not mention where the donations go but I found from the 990 form that they received just over 130,000,000 from donations and their biggest expenditure was salaries. All in all I’m sure that this non-profit is effective I’m just not entirely sure what they spend their money on it just says “help the environment” but I wasn’t able to determine what specific actions they are taking.
